By bringing memory as close as possible to the CPU, they have reduced latency issues fetching data and also reduced the power consumption required to drive the bus. Architecturally it is a leap forward. Apple does have the economies of scale and doesn't have to pay the Intel premium so they have a lot of margin to work with.
I think the iPhone A(n) processor will also move the DRAM into the same package. The SSD experts: Would it make sense moving some of the flash memory into the same package orders the package becomes unwieldy? And is the process tech very different.

How? It is the exact opposite, surely? You only have two ports instead of four, so it connects to exactly half as many peripherals as the ones with Intel chips. Also, eGPU support is gone.

My big issue is that there's even less control the user will have over the hardware and software they can put in her device. Completely forced to go through Apple for anything and everything as far as upgrades go. Can't wait to see how this affects the third party repair businesses. Just a gloried iPad, OS is still crippled. If it doesn't have or do all x86 capabilities, it is just one big phone with huge bezels. iOS Geekbench is all they got to say it is powerful meh. Run an the x86 GB app in there and lets see if it is powerful.

i would wait until arm release x1 and experiment in hackintosh mac os sur since both have same architecture ..not sure it will perform the same...apple used is very custom processor while arm x1 is also custom but less of decoders and no uma yet for pc...i pretty sure kenrel will boot on different arm processors than share same version armv8 only difference i have no clue what devices kexts has ...like sound and gpu's...its all apple stuff..nothing gonna be found for amd support

and just like that the real world value of x86 powered Macs drop like a lead brick. Pretty soon you'll be able to buy a doorstop that is quite a bit smaller then the G5 towers. That's progress! All this for the same exact price of last years models. Yay for Apple and landfills across the world!
